Petrie Terrace Gallery Award – Francis Giacco
Mr Smith is shown in his corporate attire as a Bond Trader at National Australia Bank. Outside of this role, he assumes the role of coach in junior AFL, providing mentorship through helping boys explore their physical boundaries and understanding on how to behave in times of pressure, and uncertainty.
It struck me that the coaching work on the field benefitted “Mr Smith” as much as the boys he coaches, and equally important to his own psyche as the corporate role he performs daily. My aim in painting his portrait was to convey his dedication to both roles.
Petrie Terrace Gallery Award – Lara Cresser
Wearing a wonderful original outfit from her 1960’s collection and seated with her feet in the dirt at her rural sanctuary in Northern NSW with her amazing (and uncooperative!) rescue pig, Shan, I have tried to meld the stylish gregarious Brisbane identity with the private contemplative person she relaxes into at her rural forest retreat.
Petrie Terrace Gallery Award – Bruce Heiser
This portrait depicts Professor William von Hippel, reimagined as a Homo erectus, our ancestor who first emerged in Africa two million years ago, and created a new kind of intelligence that forever altered our place on this planet.
During the sittings, von Hippel shared his insights on the new evolutionary science of human psychology. With equal parts wisdom, humour and charm, he spoke about how our past explains the present, and I began to wonder how he would have appeared two million years ago. Thankfully, von Hippel shared my curiosity and his portrait evolved from there.
People’s Choice Award
This artwork displays the subject’s strong connection to Brisbane and to the artist. Growing up, chickens were an integral part of West End living, and this is used as a symbol of the suburb’s communal values and the affectionate reciprocal relationships that form.
Huon and Joseph share a strong connection to the city, having lived in Brisbane since early childhood. Joseph was warmly welcomed into the West End community and became friends with Huon upon starting primary school. Huon was born in Brisbane and has lived here ever since.
This exhibition will run from Friday 9th of October to Sunday 1st of November at the Petrie Terrace Gallery, and can be viewed online here.

Untitled I (Deliberate Pictures Series) by Natalie Lavelle
$2800 Acrylic and Thread on Canvas 105cm
JUDGES COMMENTS:
Above all other works in the exhibition, this painting connects directly with the origins of Western abstraction from the 1910s and -20s. In so doing, it exhibits lessons learned from early adherents such as Kazimir Malevich and Theo van Doesburg. Echoing Japanese and Chinese calligraphy, Natalie’s single sweeping brush stroke is at once deliberate and controlled — yet has a looseness that provides both movement and tension to the picture. The vertical string-line bisecting the picture plane adds a note of formality and provides a reference against which the viewer might contemplate placement of the large shadowy brush stoke upon the painting’s brilliant white rectangular ground.
Thereabouts by Helen Creed
$650 91x91cm Acrylic
JUDGES COMMENTS:
This painting is a rare bird — that is, one which works as well hung on a diagonal as it does on the square. Reminiscent of knitting or Indigenous weaving patterns, the tricolour stripes, in progressively darker tones from front to back, give the painting an impression of depth and airiness. The warm tones of Helen’s painting are inviting while the imperfect straight lines provide an elasticity filled with tension.
Night Market by Kim Lowry
$250 51x61cm Acrylic on Canvas
JUDGES COMMENTS:
Straddling pure abstraction and physical reality, this tonal study of light in relation to objects could only exist in modern times. Devoid of gesture, the flatly painted areas of merged and fragmented shapes play with notions of focus and depth of field in a photographic sense. The modest size of Kim’s painting is appropriate for its humble subject matter and probably wouldn’t have worked as well on a larger scale.

Still Life #368 by Laura Phillips
Oil Painting $2000 101x91cm
JUDGES COMMENTS:
This is a successful elaboration of a simple yet engaging idea: an arrangement of rectangles as a foil for organic forms. This painting’s firm sense of design is complemented by an equally rigorous colour scheme. The play of positive and negative shape and decorative pattern across the picture surface is reconciled with well observed, naturalistic detail; the care with which the composition has been developed in no way detracts from the the lyrical energy and sense of freedom in this painting.
Amethyst and Red Lipstick by Kay Kane
Painting in Acrylic and Oils
Oil Painting $4000
JUDGES COMMENTS: Highly developed formal qualities – precise drawing, a firm grasp of the relationships between interconnected planes and a feeling for the structure of the head – make as important a contribution to this compelling portrait as as the vivid characterisation of an individual face.
Magpies by Michael Augustine
Oil Painting $2000 76x110cms
JUDGES COMMENTS: Sensitively controlled colour harmonies and a close observation of reflected light make this a highly accomplished essay in ‘contre-jour’ luminosity.
Demolition by Kathleen Dempsey
Acrylic on canvas $700 152x122cms
JUDGES COMMENTS:
This rugged and dramatic painting conveys a real sense of pathos through a bold use of scale to emphasise the monumentality of the subject. Saturated colour and direct handling are consistent with the simple and bold framing of the central motif.
Sunset Over Canaipa Passage by Abramo Papp
Oil on Linen $1200 106x76cms
JUDGES COMMENTS
A powerful mood is established though simplified forms, clean colour and most importantly an all-pervasive light.
The Ginger Plant by Peter Hubbard
Oil Painting $500 54x44cms
JUDGES COMMENTS
An astute juxtaposition of values resulting in a strategic placement of focal points leads the viewer into and around the space of this painting. Informal handling and a vibrant palette convey a sense of delight in everyday things.
Cleaning Out The Closet by David Fenoglio
Oil on Linen $1800 65x55cms
JUDGES COMMENTS
Firm drawing, a disciplined technique and well observed values make this a solidly constructed, arresting work.
Samford South Pine by Mike White
Acrylic on Canvas $600 50x75cms
JUDGES COMMENTS:
An emphatic yet well-managed composition demonstrating a natural affinity for the medium. The expressive range of a saturated palette has been exploited without sacrificing naturalistic effects or a notion of a connection to a specific place.
Story Bridge By Night by Paul Anthony
Acrylic $300 32x48cm
An original view of this much depicted subject combining firmly constructed planes, a sure instinct for spatial relationships, and a sense of immediacy bring this image to life.
Nudgee Beach Early by Tony Walker
$850 44x92cms
JUDGES COMMENTS
The confident application of washes and contrasts between the small figures and the broad areas of sky create a strong sense of atmosphere and mood.
Fassifern Valley by Greg de Silva
JUDGES COMMENTS
A fresh, direct treatment, combing a careful selection of the essential elements of the subject and its relationships as well as a confident application of the medium.
Fresh Produce by Alan Innes
Digitally Assembled Drawing $390 50x50cms **SOLD**
JUDGES COMMENTS
A very accomplished and taut essay in two dimensional design revealing a sure instinct for the juxtaposition of shapes, quality of line and distribution of values.
Old Museum – Nocturn by Joanne Heath
Photograph $295 53x41cms
JUDGES COMMENTS
The dramatic lighting on this evocative building has been thoughtfully captured.
No artworks were entered in Section 4: Sculpture/ 3D All Media
Remnants by Glen Gillard
Pen and Wash $500 47x57cm
JUDGES COMMENTS
A skilful and sensitive use of the medium to has been used to develop the lively abstract patterns in the subject. Intricate surface detail and carefully stated values contribute to create an air of mystery.
Cambodian Fishing Village by Kay Kane
Drawing $450 54x33cms
JUDGES COMMENTS
Great economy of means has been used to suggest rather than directly state essential information about space, light and sense of place.
Venice by Christine Groh
Hand Coloured Linocut $300 52x62cms **SOLD**
JUDGES COMMENTS
The graphic technique is used to great effect to convey the charm of Venice and evoke a cheerful, festive mood.
