The Queensland Figurative is a non-acquisitive competition open to Queensland Artists for paintings in which the human figure is integrated into the composition. As part of the selection criteria, artists are asked to provide a brief description of their creative process for the artwork that has been entered.

Part of the The RQAS Biennial that also includes the Young Artist Award, this exhibition is one of the highlights of the calendar at RQAS, with a prize pool of over $10000.

 

Biennial Closing Event
On Sunday, 27th of October at 1pm, join us at Petrie Terrace Gallery for the Closing event for both the Queensland Figurative and Young Artist Award. At this event we will announce the winner of the People’s Choice Award, the winners of the art raffle, and entrants will be able to pick up their artworks from 3pm at the completion of the event.

Terms & Conditions

 Entry

1.1 Entry fee $50 per artwork. Entry fees are not refundable and non-transferrable.

1.2 Entry forms can be completed either:

  • on the RQAS website,
  • emailed to: entries@rqas.com.au
  • or are to be returned to Petrie Terrace Gallery at Unit 3, 162 Petrie Terrace Brisbane.

1.3   The successful completion and submission of the entry form, image(s), process brief and payment will be considered as receipt of payment and entry only. The gallery will email you to confirm your place in the exhibition or if we need further information about your entry.

1.4   A selection process will be conducted. After the submissions have been processed, all artists will be advised if they have been selected as a finalist or not.

1.5  Only finalists will have their work exhibited in the Gallery.

1.6 Artwork must not have won a prize in any other competition. Artwork must not have been entered in an RQAS-sponsored competition in the last two years.

1.7 Entrant must be over 18 and a Queensland Resident, Proof of Address or Personal ID may be required.

Copyright & Other Permissions

2.1 Entries must be the original work of the exhibitor, and not infringe the copyright, moral rights or other rights of any third party.

2.2 This exhibition does not accept entries that were completed in whole or in part by artificial intelligence.

2.3 Entrant must have the subject’s consent to enter the artwork in this exhibition including ensuring they understand if the artwork is selected to will be displayed to the public.

2.4 Exhibitors agree to images of their work being reproduced in print and online for promotional purposes, to this end please include a digital jpeg file with your online entry or email to entries@rqas.com.au. Save file as “yourname_artworktitle”

2.5 Our gallery is open to the public & they may take photographs of your artwork, you will not hold the RQAS responsible for such photography.

Delivery

3.1 Artworks to be delivered to the Gallery at 3/162 Petrie Terrace, Brisbane, QLD, 4000, on Tuesday 24th September 10am-12pm.

3.2 If you are not able to deliver at this time please contact the gallery to make alternative arrangements once your entry form has been submitted.

Media

4.1 The artwork must be painted in Oil Paint, Acrylic (or other water-based media), Mixed Media, Pastel or as a digitally painted image.

 

4.2  A suitably framed and mounted Giclee image is acceptable as an entry for a digitally painted image. A digitally painted image must be a unique artwork, therefore an edition artwork will not be accepted as an entry.

 

4.3  Drawings, collages, photographs or artworks with photographic elements will not be accepted.

 

Artwork

5.1 The Artwork must be original work of the exhibitor and not infringe the copyright, moral rights or other rights of any third party. If you are submitting a portrait, the entrant must have the subject’s consent to enter the artwork in this exhibition including ensuring they understand the artwork may be displayed to the public.

5.2 Exhibitors agree to images of their work being reproduced in print and online for promotional purposes, to this end please include a digital jpeg file with your online entry or email to entries@rqas.com.au. Save file as “yourname_artworktitle”

5.3 All efforts will be made to ensure the necessary acknowledgements of authorship are made.

5.4 Artworks must not exceed 1.5 meters in width (including frame).

5.5 Artworks must be clearly labelled with Artist Name & Name.

5.6 Entries are accepted, displayed, and returned at the owner’s risk. Freight and insurance are also the owner’s responsibility. All care will be taken, but no responsibility accepted for loss or damage.

5.7 Should any dispute arise where no specific ruling is laid down the committee’s decision is final.

Presentation:

6.1 Artworks MUST be clean, dry and professionally finished (such as but not limited to: squared up, with no damage to work or frame). Any artwork not professionally finished will not be able to be placed on display.

6.2 Stretched canvas edges must be cleanly finished, either by painting in a solid colour, or by painting in round.

6.3 Artworks must be ready to hang on the wall using medium or large “D” rings placed approximately 5cm from the top of the frame. Wire or string is not required.

6.4 Artworks will only be displayed at the discretion of the Gallery, we will not display artwork deemed unsafe, offensive, or unsuitable.

6.5 Any questions artists have during installation must be addressed to the Creative Director or their representative.

 

Sales

7.1 Artwork must be for sale, please allow for RQAS commission and any applicable GST when setting price.

7.2 The gallery will charge 33% commission (including GST) on all sales.

7.3 We offer 3-month lay-by options for buyers. Any lay-by not finalised within this time will have the artwork returned to the Artist.

7.4 Artists will be paid for any sales after the end of the exhibition OR when any lay-by is paid in full.

Pick up/Bump Out

8.1 Entries may ONLY be picked up at the end of the exhibition.

8.2 Works not collected within three months of the exhibition closing date may be disposed of at the discretion of the RQAS Management Committee.

Events & Prizes

9.1 All entrants and their guests’ must book for opening and other events via Humanitix. Dress code: Dress to impress!

People’s Choice will be awarded at the end of the Exhibition.

The Judge/s decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.

Selection and Judging

10.1 Selector/s will view all the digital images and select the finalists for the exhibition from the images received.

10.2 The Judge will award the prizes from the finalist exhibition.

10.3 The decision of the Judge/s is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
