Using toned paper has many advantages. When drawing on a toned surface (grey paper) acts as an intermediate value, simplifying and often speeding the process. Drawing papers are available in mid grey value (tone) allowing the artist to focus on highlights and shadows. Many different media including, white or black charcoal and graphite can provide contrasts and the intermediate values provided by the paper’s colour assist to unify and link the composition beautifully. Furthermore, beginning on a grey surface is less daunting than the usual white of paper.
Areas can be left unfinished and open to provide a unique and mysterious quality to the artwork.
