Whether you are building foundations or refining skills you already possess\, the focus remains the same: portraiture drawing that is grounded in clear seeing rather than photographic imitation. \nThis course follows the same format as Kay’s workshop Fundamental Structure of the Human Head. At its core\, the course treats the essential elements of all drawing—size\, scale\, shape\, tonal relationships and spatial organisation—as equally vital. You will practise selecting\, organising and simplifying so that accurate\, eloquent observation becomes second nature. This disciplined seeing is the necessary groundwork for any expressive interpretation of the human face but can equally be applied to subjects other than portraiture. \nThroughout the five weeks\, Dr Kane will teach these fundamentals to the group while also giving regular one-to-one feedback\, so every participant—whether first-time or returning—receives personal guidance tailored to their stage of development. Returning artists often discover that revisiting the same principles with individual attention reveals new layers of understanding and opens fresh possibilities for expression. New students gain a solid\, structured pathway into portraiture. Portraits of children are cherished possessions\, freezing family moments in time. The Victorian era viewed childhood as a fleeting age of innocence\, a precious stage of life. This talk steps into the world of the nineteenth century child and discusses portraits of Australian colonial childhood. It will delve into the many reasons for why we make portraits of children\, from sentimental keepsakes to declarations of dynastic pride and generational authority. \n  \n\n  \nElisabeth Findlay is a Professor of Art Theory at the Queensland College of Art and Design\, Griffith University. She has held senior academic leadership positions at both Griffith University and The Australian National University. From 2020 to 2023 she was the first female Director of Queensland College of Art and Design and previously was an Associate Dean (Student Experience) in the College of Arts and Social Sciences at The Australian National University. She has extensive experience in international engagement and in 2019 was appointed as a Visiting Fellow at Shandong University of the Arts. Elisabeth is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. \nElisabeth lectures in the history of Australian art and theories of portraiture. She has received numerous teaching awards\, including a national citation for her outstanding contribution to student learning and she is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her research focuses on issues of identity\, race\, gender\, class and nationalism in Australian visual culture. She has curated several exhibitions on early Australian colonial art. Elisabeth is currently completing the book publication ‘Portraiture in Colonial Australia: Picturing the Nation’ (under contract with Routledge). \n  \n  \nThis talk will be held at RQAS Brisbane Gallery on Sunday\, 18th of October from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Whether you are building foundations or refining skills you already possess\, the focus remains the same: portraiture drawing that is grounded in clear seeing rather than photographic imitation. \nThis course follows the same format as Kay’s workshop Fundamental Structure of the Human Head. At its core\, the course treats the essential elements of all drawing—size\, scale\, shape\, tonal relationships and spatial organisation—as equally vital. You will practise selecting\, organising and simplifying so that accurate\, eloquent observation becomes second nature. This disciplined seeing is the necessary groundwork for any expressive interpretation of the human face but can equally be applied to subjects other than portraiture. \nThroughout the five weeks\, Dr Kane will teach these fundamentals to the group while also giving regular one-to-one feedback\, so every participant—whether first-time or returning—receives personal guidance tailored to their stage of development. Whether you are building foundations or refining skills you already possess\, the focus remains the same: portraiture drawing that is grounded in clear seeing rather than photographic imitation. \nThis course follows the same format as Kay’s workshop Fundamental Structure of the Human Head. At its core\, the course treats the essential elements of all drawing—size\, scale\, shape\, tonal relationships and spatial organisation—as equally vital. You will practise selecting\, organising and simplifying so that accurate\, eloquent observation becomes second nature. This disciplined seeing is the necessary groundwork for any expressive interpretation of the human face but can equally be applied to subjects other than portraiture. \nThroughout the five weeks\, Dr Kane will teach these fundamentals to the group while also giving regular one-to-one feedback\, so every participant—whether first-time or returning—receives personal guidance tailored to their stage of development. Returning artists often discover that revisiting the same principles with individual attention reveals new layers of understanding and opens fresh possibilities for expression. New students gain a solid\, structured pathway into portraiture. Artists may choose to paint the edge a single colour such as grey or a colour that complements the artwork\, see  Figure 1\, or you may complete the artwork in the “round” as in Figure 2. In the “round” means to extend the painting around the edge of the canvas. Essentially\, the edges should not have random marks\, such as fingerprints or paint drips. \nD Rings \nFramed artworks and works on canvas (or otherwise mounted) must be ready to hang on the wall using medium or large sized “D” rings placed approximately 5-10cm from the top of the frame. Attach hooks facing upwards and on the outside of the canvas frame\, as pictured in Figure 3. Wire or string is not required. However\, if you would like to add wire or string\, please see Figure 3. As you can see the wire is further down the canvas and is not attached to the top “D” ring. \nSquaring Up \nTo determine if a rectangular or square canvas is “square” or “squared up”\, measure the diagonal of the canvas/artwork\, and it should be the same length both ways. Please refer to Figure 4. \nFoxing & Mould \nFoxing is an age-related process of deterioration that causes spots and browning and can appear as brown\, yellow\, or red stains on the paper or canvas. If it appears on an artwork mat\, the work must be reframed with a new mat. If it appears on the canvas or paper\, it must be treated and repainted\, so it is not visible. \nArtwork Labels  \nClearly mark the artist’s name\, contact details\, the title of work\, and price on an artwork label\, to be placed on the back of the work. We need this information to easily identify your artwork before the exhibition labels (didactics) and catalogue are printed for the exhibition. Whether you are building foundations or refining skills you already possess\, the focus remains the same: portraiture drawing that is grounded in clear seeing rather than photographic imitation. \nThis course follows the same format as Kay’s workshop Fundamental Structure of the Human Head. At its core\, the course treats the essential elements of all drawing—size\, scale\, shape\, tonal relationships and spatial organisation—as equally vital. You will practise selecting\, organising and simplifying so that accurate\, eloquent observation becomes second nature. This disciplined seeing is the necessary groundwork for any expressive interpretation of the human face but can equally be applied to subjects other than portraiture. \nThroughout the five weeks\, Dr Kane will teach these fundamentals to the group while also giving regular one-to-one feedback\, so every participant—whether first-time or returning—receives personal guidance tailored to their stage of development. Exploring this year’s theme\, the works included trace and reflect the subtle terrain of the inner worlds of the exhibiting artists – from the spark of recognition\, to the ache of understanding\, the confusion of becoming\, and the quiet persistence of hope. \nThis group show featuring the artwork of Claudje Lecompte\, Tabitha Ford\, Bethany Mahadeo and Jannie B. This helps the gallery to create a cohesive exhibition with a professional look\, as well as ensuring the hanging process is easy and safe for our staff and volunteers. \nPLEASE REFER TO THE EXHIBITION TERMS & CONDITIONS FOR MINIMUM FRAMING REQUIREMENTS. \nArtworks must be clean\, dry and professionally finished before being delivered to the gallery. This includes cleaning the glass and wiping off any dust that may have accumulated while in storage. \nTo download guidelines and view images please click here \nPainted Edges & Framed Works \nIf works on stretched canvas are not framed the edges of the canvas must be cleanly finished. Artists may choose to paint the edge a single colour such as grey or a colour that complements the artwork\, see  Figure 1\, or you may complete the artwork in the “round” as in Figure 2. In the “round” means to extend the painting around the edge of the canvas. Essentially\, the edges should not have random marks\, such as fingerprints or paint drips. \nD Rings \nFramed artworks and works on canvas (or otherwise mounted) must be ready to hang on the wall using medium or large sized “D” rings placed approximately 5-10cm from the top of the frame. Attach hooks facing upwards and on the outside of the canvas frame\, as pictured in Figure 3. Wire or string is not required. However\, if you would like to add wire or string\, please see Figure 3. As you can see the wire is further down the canvas and is not attached to the top “D” ring. \nSquaring Up \nTo determine if a rectangular or square canvas is “square” or “squared up”\, measure the diagonal of the canvas/artwork\, and it should be the same length both ways. Please refer to Figure 4. \nFoxing & Mould \nFoxing is an age-related process of deterioration that causes spots and browning and can appear as brown\, yellow\, or red stains on the paper or canvas. If it appears on an artwork mat\, the work must be reframed with a new mat. If it appears on the canvas or paper\, it must be treated and repainted\, so it is not visible. \nArtwork Labels  \nClearly mark the artist’s name\, contact details\, the title of work\, and price on an artwork label\, to be placed on the back of the work. We need this information to easily identify your artwork before the exhibition labels (didactics) and catalogue are printed for the exhibition. Some artists choose to write this information on the back of the frame/canvas directly.
