SUMMARY:Harold & Agnes Richardson Drawing Prize 2027
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1523319263370{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nThis prize celebrates the practice of drawing\, a foundational skill for good artistic practice. Artists are invited to submit drawings completed in a variety of media including (but not limited to) pencil\, graphite\, charcoal\, or pen. \nEntries must be monochromatic with tonal gradations derived from main media used. A small amount of colour may be used to enhance the drawing; however\, this must be kept to a minimum. Artists may also choose to include a supporting sketchbook to be displayed in the finalist’s exhibition\, however this will not be part of the judging process. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_column_text] \nHistory of the Harold and Agnes Richardson Drawing Prize \nThe Harold Richardson Drawing Award was instigated in 1984 by the Royal Queensland Art Society\, shortly after his Passing. Richardson himself wasn’t an artist but had a passion for the visual arts. Both Harold and his wife Agnes\, (they were married in 1953) contributed greatly to the art scene in Queensland\, and in particular to the Royal Queensland Art Society. \nHarold Richardson was born in 1901 and became a member of the RQAS in the 1940’s\, and it wasn’t long before he became Honorary Secretary in 1948 and 1949.His brother Albert Richardson was a very good Landscape painter\, and as Don Hamilton remembers: a very good watercolourist. Harold always thought he should be an artist\, and he did at one time have a few lessons with Caroline Barker (Agnes’s sister)\, but didn’t continue. His activities in later years focused on the effective running of the society. From 1970 to 1977 he was secretary\, and in 1978 became president\, and held that position until 1980. His aims were to lift the standard of the society by increasing the membership\, and concentrate on promoting art\, both from the participation point of view and the area of appreciation. He was the society’s first Gallery Director in 1971\, just three years after the society premises were built in Spring Hill. He was a tireless worker for the Society\, and during his term as Director he managed to get the Annual Exhibitions in newly completed buildings in the city centre\, which as Keith Bradbury noted: it brought a new visibility to the Society. In1977 he was nominated for the Queens Silver Medal and in 1981 was awarded Honorary Life membership to the RQAS. \nAgnes Richardson (Barker) was born in 1907 and came from an artistic family. The family moved from Melbourne to Brisbane in 1920. In 1925 Agnes enrolled as a full time student at the central Technical College in George Street\, studying painting under F.J. Martyn Roberts and pottery with L.J. Harvey. Harvey encouraged her to take up sculpture\, but because of ill health she was unable to continue in this field. She gave up pottery in 1934\, to focus on craft/arts\, although some of her pottery was exhibited in the exhibition L.J. Harvey and his School at the Queensland art gallery in 1983. Agnes first exhibited with the RQAS in1929\, and has had close association since. She was awarded Honorary life Membership in 1976. In later years she concentrated on bark painting and oriental brush painting\, exhibiting both art forms with the RQAS. In January 2007\, Agnes joined a very special group of people as a centenarian\, having reached 100 years of age. She was still working at her art\, making her own gift cards. Her success in business – as in life – seems to stem from the unique way she sees the world. I just look at things\, and suddenly they become something different. With her passing in 2008\, an endowment of funds from her estate was made available to the RQAS to continue the Drawing award\, originally named after her husband with her name now added to the prize. \nThe prize is for drawing (predominantly line work)\, and has for the most been held as a separate exhibition. It has on the odd occasion been attached to the Annual exhibition\, 1993 was one case in point. The prize has always been an open exhibition\, which means any artist can enter the prize as long as they pay the entry fee. Some of the past winners include: Rodger Paine\, Kath Dempsey\, Ada Richardson\, Sara Furness\, Yuming Qin and Kathy Panton. Others fortunate to gain a Highly Commended and Commended were: Shirley Miller\, Betty Cox\, Mary Norrie\, Dennis Freeman\, Graham Readshaw\, Joanne Heath\, Penelope Gilbert-Ng\, Frances Erskine\, Peter Hubbard\, Audrey Gibbs\, Maaret Webb and Sue Pickford. Some of those who judged the prize include: Brian Dean\, Dr Irene Amos\, Pat Hoffie\, Chris Saines\, Julie Lloyd\, George D Williamson\, David Paulson\, and David Henderson. These are just a few of the talents connected with this award over the years. Drawings in multiple colours using coloured pencil\, coloured inks\, or drawings using washes where the majority of the work is in colour are not permitted.\n2.3. This exhibition does not accept entries that were completed in whole or in part by Artificial Intelligence (AI). \nELIGIBILITY\n1.1. Artwork must not have won a prize in any other competition.\n1.2. Artwork must not have been a finalist in a previous RQAS sponsored competition (i.e. judged)\n1.3. Artwork must be for sale. Artists aged 17yrs or under DO NOT have to list their artwork for sale but must notify gallery at time of entry. \nSIZE\n4.1 Artworks must not exceed 1.53m in width\, including the width of the frame.\n4.2 All works must not weigh more than 15kgs and able to be easily and safely carried by 1 to 2 people\n4.3 May be made up of multiple panels\, providing all panels still fit within the size restrictions noted above. \nPERMISSIONS & COPYRIGHT\n5.1. Exhibitors agree to grant RQAS Brisbane a non-exclusive\, sub-licensable\, worldwide\, perpetual and irrevocable license to exercise copyright in your artwork for the purposes of administering\, promoting and providing information about the exhibition. This includes producing photographs\, catalogues and advertising for promotional purposes\n5.2. Entries must be the original work of the exhibitor\, and not infringe the copyright\, moral rights\, or other rights of any third party. Entries should also adhere to Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property protocols.\n5.3. If you are submitting an artwork of a personality\, the entrant must have the subject’s consent to enter the artwork in this exhibition including ensuring they understand the artwork may be displayed to the public. \nPRESENTATION\n6.1 The work must be suitably presented and ready to be safely displayed with the appropriate hardware (6.3)\, as well as being clean and dry. Damaged artworks/frames will not be able to be placed on display.\n6.2 Any artwork not clean or professionally finished will not be able to be placed on display. This includes but is not limited to stretched canvas edges being painted in the round or in a solid colour. Stretched canvas must be square. Refer to framing guidelines.\n6.3 Framed artworks and works on canvas (or otherwise mounted) must be ready to hang on the wall using large “D” rings placed approximately 5cm from the top of the frame. Wire or string is not required. Refer to framing guidelines.\n6.4 Your artwork must be clearly labelled on the back with your name and contact details.\n6.5 Artworks will only be displayed at the absolute discretion of the RQAS Brisbane Gallery. We will not display any artwork deemed unsafe\, offensive\, or unsuitable.\n6.6 Multi-panelled artworks must include a picture of the assembled work with clear instructions for installation.\n6.7 Any questions artists have during installation must be addressed to the Director of Gallery Operations or their representative. \nSELECTION\, JUDGING AND PRIZES\n7.1. A selection process will be conducted by a qualified selection panel which includes the exhibition judge/s\n7.2. After submissions have been processed\, all artists will be emailed to advise if they have been selected as a finalist or not. Only finalists will have their work exhibited in the exhibition\n7.3. Freight and insurance are also the owner’s responsibility. All care will be taken\, but no responsibility accepted for loss or damage.\n8.3 Artworks cannot be delivered by post. This helps the gallery to create a cohesive exhibition with a professional look\, as well as ensuring the hanging process is easy and safe for our staff and volunteers. \nPLEASE REFER TO THE EXHIBITION TERMS & CONDITIONS FOR MINIMUM FRAMING REQUIREMENTS. \nArtworks must be clean\, dry and professionally finished before being delivered to the gallery. This includes cleaning the glass and wiping off any dust that may have accumulated while in storage. \nTo download guidelines and view images please click here \nPainted Edges & Framed Works \nIf works on stretched canvas are not framed the edges of the canvas must be cleanly finished. Artists may choose to paint the edge a single colour such as grey or a colour that complements the artwork\, see  Figure 1\, or you may complete the artwork in the “round” as in Figure 2. In the “round” means to extend the painting around the edge of the canvas. Essentially\, the edges should not have random marks\, such as fingerprints or paint drips. \nD Rings \nFramed artworks and works on canvas (or otherwise mounted) must be ready to hang on the wall using medium or large sized “D” rings placed approximately 5-10cm from the top of the frame. Attach hooks facing upwards and on the outside of the canvas frame\, as pictured in Figure 3. Wire or string is not required. However\, if you would like to add wire or string\, please see Figure 3. As you can see the wire is further down the canvas and is not attached to the top “D” ring. \nSquaring Up \nTo determine if a rectangular or square canvas is “square” or “squared up”\, measure the diagonal of the canvas/artwork\, and it should be the same length both ways. Please refer to Figure 4. \nFoxing & Mould \nFoxing is an age-related process of deterioration that causes spots and browning and can appear as brown\, yellow\, or red stains on the paper or canvas. If it appears on an artwork mat\, the work must be reframed with a new mat. If it appears on the canvas or paper\, it must be treated and repainted\, so it is not visible. \nArtwork Labels  \nClearly mark the artist’s name\, contact details\, the title of work\, and price on an artwork label\, to be placed on the back of the work. We need this information to easily identify your artwork before the exhibition labels (didactics) and catalogue are printed for the exhibition. Some artists choose to write this information on the back of the frame/canvas directly.
